Description:

Spiral of Gratitude is a memorial to San Francisco’s fallen police officers located in the lobby of San Francisco’s new police headquarters. The vision and intent of the artwork was integrated into the building to create an immersive experience for occupants and the public at large. The carefully engineered bent glass cylinder, 16.5’ tall and 9’ diameter, forms an oculus/skylight to frame the sky above. Ceramic frit was used to inscribe expressions of gratitude and loss gathered from surviving family members and crafted into an evocative poem. As the day passes, different portions of the poem are reflected on the wall behind, acting as a cinematic counterpoint to the larger painted wall text. Evening illumination ensures the artwork is always visible. This ethereal, multi-layered interplay of language, light, glass and sky creates a visually arresting artwork that invites contemplation and provides a welcoming public face for this important civic building.
