Research Abstract
Curricular Considerations in Arts Administration: A Comparison of Views From the Field

By matching educational needs and graduate program offerings, this study was designed to produce a guide to individuals committed to professional arts management, and in particular for use by three separate groups: directors of arts administration graduate training programs, their potential students, and individuals with the authority and responsibility to hire graduates of such programs.

The emerging professionalization of arts administration inspires some questioning and review of available training programs. With better prepared administrators entering the professional job market, the advanced degree in arts administration may become a requirement for employment. Most published literature concerning the skills necessary for competent management of the arts addresses itself directly to arts administrators presently employed in the field. Generally speaking, the available literature seeks to help arts administrators improve skills they presumably already possess to a greater or lesser extent. There remains a need to correlate degree granting graduate level programs in arts administration with the practical needs of arts organizations, as perceived by their professional leaders.

By matching educational needs and graduate program offerings, our study was designed to produce a guide to individuals committed to professional arts management, and in particular for use by three separate groups: directors of arts administration graduate training programs, their potential students, and individuals with the authority and responsibility to hire graduates of such programs.
