A history of National Endowment for the Arts funding from 1966-2021.

The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us—fostering creativity, empathy, and beauty. The arts also strengthen our communities socially, educationally, and economically—benefits that persist even during a pandemic that has been devastating to the arts. The following ten reasons show why an investment in artists and arts organizations is vital to the nation’s post-pandemic healing and recovery. 

This study examines the problem of government support for the arts and its implications for artistic freedom. Assuming, then, that the developments of the sixties [1960's] mark a new stage in an expanding relationship between government and the arts, it seems useful to inquire into the nature of that relationship, most especially its implications for artistic freedom.

The author discusses the role of the arts in national policy and the role the arts play in a democratic society. Included in this pamphlet is a summary of the provisions of Senate Bill 1483 which established the National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities. Also included is a edited version of the discussion with Roger L. Stevens on the new program of federal aid for the arts.

Report is a survey of programs and policies throughout the federal government that relate to arts and culture including the executive agencies, the National Capital and such areas as taxation, postal rates, and copyright laws. There are also recommendations concerning the establishment of a President's Advisory Council on the Arts and a National Arts Foundation.
