Major success for Broadway summer openings

Three of the four new shows of the 2015-2016 Broadway season have excelled at the summer box office, dispelling the myth that premiering during the summer is a ticket to dwindling audiences and financial strife. According to research by the Broadway League, the hip-hop musical “Hamilton” and the plays “Penn & Teller on Broadway” and “An Act of God” have had a strapping showing at the box office, grossing over $1 million a week by the end of July.

Senate Finance Committee Approves IRA Charitable Rollover Extension

Today, the Senate Finance Committee considered legislation to extend several expired tax provisions, including the IRA Charitable Rollover. The provision is a key tax incentive for charitable giving and an important funding source for nonprofit groups, including arts organizations. It most recently expired on December 31, 2014.

The New York City Council has passed a bill which will give the public more say in the city’s Percent for Art program. Since 1982, the Percent for Art program has allocated one percent of the budget for all city-funded construction projects for public art.

This morning, First Lady Michelle Obama joined the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Acting Director Maura Marx to present the 2015 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. Ten institutions from across the country attended the White House Ceremony to be recognized for outstanding service to their communities. These organizations demonstrate significant impact and high quality of programs, services, and partnerships, and were selected among thirty finalists. In Nashville, a $200 grant to the Nashville nonprofit the Housing Fund will provide housing assistance for artists live/work spaces. The “Make a Mark Program” is funded by the Kresge and Surdna Foundations and will provide financing to artists and creatives to live permanently in Nashville and Davidson County.

Americans for the Arts' Artist Committee member and American artist, Jeff Koons, helps push forward public charity in the arts world with his $4million dollar piece, auctioned off by Project Perpetual on Nov. 9. The piece, based on Picasso’s La Soupe and titled Gazing Ball (Charity), stands six feet tall and is slung with donated Hermès handbags.

The results are in for this year’s “Art of Education” Campaign!  Congratulations to Cascade K-8 Community School of Shoreline, WA, recipient of the $5,000 grand prize.  Consumers, parents, and educators nationwide determined the grant winners by voting for their favorite K-12 public schools through the KRIS Facebook page.

On Monday, September 15, 2014, a series of press releases announced a long awaited wave of funding specifically for the arts and education of Brooklyn.  While arts and education funding is usually channeled elsewhere, this support was championed by local leaders and advocates who firmly believe in the ability and promise of their local institutions.  All together, over $175 million will be split between local arts and cultural institutions, schools across the borough, and the largest expansion ever for afterschool programming that will be available for more than 34,000 students.&n
