Americans for the Arts, the leading organization for advancing the arts and arts education in America, announced today that it is presenting the 2016 American Express Emerging Leaders Award to Octavia Yearwood, Arts Educator and CEO/Director of Team Ohhh. Given annually since 2006 and sponsored by American Express since 2011, the award recognizes an exceptional new and/or young arts professional for their exemplary leadership, deep engagement with community, and strong commitment to advancing the arts.

The effort was driven by the board of Americans for the Arts, compelled to re-commit the action, time, and resources toward cultural equity after field-wide engagement with changing demographics and changing habits of participation and consumption of the arts.

Americans for the Arts will hold its annual convention in Boston from June 17–19, 2016. It is the largest national gathering of arts leaders and their partners in creative business, education, and government, and is expected to draw upwards of 1,000 attendees. A series of prominent speakers and arts innovators will explore the deep and diverse economic, civic, and social impacts that the arts generate for our nation’s neighborhoods and cities, as well as the role of the arts in creating and sustaining healthy, vibrant, and equitable communities. More than 120 speakers in 32 sessions will cover a wide range of topics including arts education, public art, arts funding, cultural equity, employee engagement, research, and advocacy. Three pre-conferences will focus on arts leadership, community transformation, and public art.

Rubenstein, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of The Carlyle Group, will deliver the David Rockefeller Lecture on arts and business. Held on Wednesday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m. at The TimesCenter in New York City, the evening will also feature an introduction by acclaimed singer Renée Fleming, and a performance by Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra Blakey Ensemble.

The NABE Foundation, the charitable arm of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE), and Americans for the Arts, the leading organization for advancing the arts and arts education in America, jointly announced today that Mary Anne Phan has won the eighth annual NABE Foundation/Americans for the Arts Scholarship Award. Phan was presented with the scholarship yesterday at the 2016 NABE Economic Policy Conference in Washington, DC.

Vans has announced that its Vans Custom Culture design competition has been named a finalist in the education category for the 2016 Cause Marketing Halo Awards. The Vans Custom Culture design competition was founded in 2010 with the goal of raising awareness of diminishing arts education budgets across the country and to help students express their #RightToArt. In 2012, Vans Custom Culture partnered with Americans for the Arts, and aims to show high school students how creativity can be their strongest asset as they grow and that artistic careers are viable.
