Research Abstract
Directory of the Canadian Film, Television and Video Industry, 1991

Telefilm Canada is a Crown corporation with a mandate to develop and promote Canada's film, television and video industry. Through Telefilm Canada, the Government of Canada provides support, as a partner, to the private sector for the production of film and broadcast material, either in the form of investment funds or through a variety of resources at Telefilm's disposal. The Corporation gives precedence to high-quality productions that constitute original expressions of Canadian identity and culture, and that will appeal to wide audiences in Canada and abroad.

Telefilm Canada meets the diverse needs of this booming industry through a wide range of Funds, participating in about three hundred projects each year. The Corporation invests more than $100 million every year in the production and development of film and broadcast material. Of this total, two-thirds is devoted to production in English, and one-third to production in French. Telefilm Canada also invests in the distribution, marketing, dubbing and subtitling of Canadian productions.

Telefilm Canada's goals are to strengthen the competitive position of Canadian films, television programmes and videos, as well as raising the export profile of Canadian companies, and to assist them in developing marketing and promotion strategies in Canada and abroad. The Corporation also coordinates Canada's participation in international festivals, and administers a program of grants to Canadian festivals. Telefilm Canada is responsible for managing the co-production agreements for film and television programmes signed by Canada with twenty foreign countries. (p. 5)
