Grants for Film, Media and Communications lists 2,106 grants of $10,000 or more with a total value of $185,875,317 by 533 foundations mostly in 1992 or 1993. It covers grants for journalism and publishing, film and video, radio and television, general media and communications technology, censorship issues pertaining to audiovisual and print media, public television, and radio stations, journalism and communications departments and programs within academic institutions, media institutes, university presses, and the publication and film programs of a wide variety of agencies. Included are grants for the production of films, documentaries and audiovisual materials, policy research in areas such as children's television, and cable communications development. ( p. i)

Within this volume, the grants are arranged alphabetically by state, then foundation name, and recipient name within each foundation listing. For each grant you will find the following information: the name, city and state location (or foreign country location) of the recipient organization; the amount awarded; the fiscal year of grant authorization (or payment); and a description of the activity funded. Access to the grants is available through three indexes; an index of recipient names, a geographic index (arranged by recipient state, or foreign country location, then recipient name) and an index of subject words. These indexes can be found following the list of grants. References are to grant identification numbers NOT pages.

Statistical tables analyzing overall giving follow this introduction. These tables provide information on dollar amounts and number of grants according to the following breakdowns; foundation name; recipient state (or foreign country); primary subject; type of support (capital, general, research, etc), recipient type, population group served. Additionally, a list of the top 15 recipients by highest grant dollar amount and a list of the top 25 foundations awarding grants in this subject area are included with the statistics.
