Americans for the Arts, a leading partner in The National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS), will launch in partnership with NCCAS the 2014 National Core Arts Standards in a streaming webinar on Wednesday, June 4, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Join arts education leaders from around the country to learn more about the new standards. The event will feature interviews with a broad spectrum of arts education providers, including certified educators, teaching artists, administrators, national/state policy makers, and arts education advocates.

From September 2013 to February 2014, you can see 51 different pieces of art in different mediums including sculpture, photography, prints, multi-media, and many more – all done by 41 different faculty members from 10 different institutions across the state of South Dakota. These works of art are part of the South Dakota University and College Art Faculty Exhibition.

New York musicians, the Dana Leong Trio, bring a collage of musical styles to The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Mar. 19. The group brings together an exciting blend of jazz, rock, and classical music.

The Dana Leong Trio, features Dana on cello, trombone, and electronics. Sam Sellers is on bass and Val-Inc performs turntables and electronics. This trio is the latest incarnation of Leong’s ever-expansive compositions. Of which, bring together an exciting blend of instrumental melodies and driving musical grooves.

The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center presents the work of Black Hills State University (BHSU) senior art students April 3-25. The opening reception takes place 5:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, Apr. 10 in the art gallery. The exhibit is free and open to the public during gallery hours, Mon. through Sat., 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Black Hills singer/songwriter, Jami Lynn, releases her second full length solo album of folk and Americana songs at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 10 at the Matthews Opera House. The album, “Fall is a Good Time to Die,” features 10 original tracks. Advance ticket sales are $15 all seats, and “at the door” $20 all seats. (SPEARFISH, SD) Up-and-coming Nashville band, The Barefoot Movement, performs live at The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center, Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m.

The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center honors the work of a local Black Hills State University (BHSU) student. The Matthews Art Gallery will be displaying, “Transcendence: The Journey of Autism,” works by Ethan Engel. An opening reception will be held Friday, Feb. 6, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The exhibit runs Feb. 6-28.

The Matthews stage will light up the dark days of February with the last play in the Jones Hope Wooten trilogy, “The Last Round-up of the Guacamole Queens.” This community theater event will take place over two weekends, Feb. 13-15, 20-22. The Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday performances are at 2:00 p.m. This is one of The Matthews’ Subscription Series events, but tickets may be purchased individually for $15 adults, $5 youth and BHSU students. In its 36th year, the show is open to applicants of all ages, levels, and media. This event is free and open to the public during gallery hours, Jan. 13-24.

This event is open to any artist, amateur or professional, who wishes to participate. The categories are divided by age ranging from kindergarten through high school, to adult.

The cold, dark days of January will be brightened with up a different film every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center 21st Foreign Film Festival. Individual tickets are $8 all seats or patrons may purchase a Producer’s Pass for $25. Each pass has four admittances which can be used in any combination and must be purchased in advance.

Internationally known Danish a cappella group, Basix, takes the stage at the Matthews Opera House at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19. Spanning pop, jazz, r&b, soul, and rock this group blends strong original compositions with innovative arrangements of timeless songs. Musicians, singers, cowboys, and puppets go onstage at The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center with a variety show titled, “The Black Hills Travelin’ Medicine Show. This mix of music, comedy, and puppetry will entertain the entire family. The show is at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14 in The Matthews Opera House theater. he Matthews Art Gallery presents an exhibit into the beauty, art, and skill of modern fiber artists. The exhibit will present the work of TEN Black Hills fiber artists. The opening reception will be held 5:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7 in the gallery. This show will run from November 7-29 in the art gallery 10:00-5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The event is free and open to the public.

The Matthews Opera House opens the world of deception and deceit with the announcement of its Fall Gala Fundraiser, “Café Murder,” a murder mystery dinner theater event. It will take place 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Spearfish Holiday Inn & Convention Center. Tickets are $65 a person, or $60 per person with the purchase of a table of six. The touring company, Nebraska Theatre Caravan, takes the stage at The Matthews Opera House with the production of “The Lady with All the Answers.” This one-woman play is at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9 at the Matthews Opera House. With the help of Ann Landers’ daughter, Margo Howard, writer David Rambo derived “The Lady with All the Answers” from the life and letters of Eppie Lederer, soon to be known as Ann Landers. Tickets are $20 for all seats.
