Funding Arts, Health, and Well-Being Across the Military Continuum

Friday, July 20, 2018

At the 86th Annual Meeting in Boston, the United States Conference of Mayors passed a resolution Funding Arts, Health, and Well-Being Across the Military Continuum. The resolution, passed in the Metro Economics Committee, cited the potential of creative arts therapies and artist directed programs to positively impact the healthcare spending concerns, quality of care issues, and healthcare needs of active military and veteran populations.

Also cited was the growth of the National Initiative for Arts & Health in the Military (NIAHM) at Americans for the Arts, a resource that has increased its National Initiative Directory to include over 200 listings from 46 states and Canada and nearly 3,000 recipients of the monthly NIAHM Arts & Military Connection E-Newsletter since the original 2014 resolution.

The resolution also commends the public/private collaborations of Americans for the Arts with the US Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Patient Centered Care and Cultural Transformation and the cooperative agreement with Creative Forces: NEA Military Healing Arts Network, impacting the creative needs of our military populations, clinically and in communities.
