In Providence, Rhode Island, the nonprofit arts and culture industry generates nearly $206 million in economic activity per year. Spending by arts nonprofits and their audiences supports 5,115 full-time equivalent jobs and generates $21 million in city and state tax revenue.

These numbers come from Arts and Economic Prosperity 5, a national economic impact study by Americans for the Arts. The study measured the economic contributions of arts and culture nonprofits in 341 study regions across the country. The City of Providence, the capital of Rhode Island and a hub for culture in New England, joined the study as one of 250 partners. Mayor Jorge Elorza voiced his enthusiasm about the study results.

“In Providence, the immense impact of the creative economy is clear,” Elorza said in a statement. “Arts activity creates and sustains jobs for our residents, generates millions in revenue, and makes us a destination for tourists. As the Creative Capital, the arts help us attract and retain businesses and have revitalized our neighborhoods.”
