On July 9th, Senate confirmed Dr. William "Bro" Adams to lead the National Endowment for the Humanities, the independent federal agency that supports research and learning in history, literature, philosophy, and other areas of the humanities by funding selected, peer-reviewed proposals from around the nation. He was nominated by President Obama on April 10th.

A native of Birmingham, Michigan, Adams earned his undergraduate degree at Colorado College and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He studied in France as a Fulbright Scholar and served three years in the Army, where he became motivated to study and teach in the humanities. Prior to his appointment, he was the president of Colby College in Waterville, Maine, a position he held from 2000 until his retirement in June 2014.

“We at Americans for the Arts are excited to work with Dr. Adams,” said Robert Lynch, President and CEO of Americans for the Arts. “Dr. Adams’ has demonstrated a great commitment to education, the arts, as well as the military—issues and topics our organization embraces.”

Adams will become the 10th chairman of the agency.  He is expected to start his new position in the coming days.
