The Americans for the Arts policy roundtable convenes a select group of artists, philanthropists and thought leaders in lively dialogues that explore how we can create a more vibrant role for arts and culture in the 21st century American society.
The 2016 Americans for the Arts National Arts Policy Roundtable convened on September 22-24, 2016 in Sundance, UT.
The 2016 Roundtable, Negotiating the New: Public and Private Sector Support in Changing Times, addressed head-on the uncertainty of “the new” and the role that the arts can play in a society desperately in need of unification and healing. Our discussions explored the arts’ role as a point of connection across all levels of society. We explored support for, and the benefits of, the arts at the local and national levels, and particularly how philanthropy can empower artists. These discussions also highlighted the extent to which the arts can act as a constant through all phases of an individual’s life – whether as a tool to be embraced early on to help children succeed, or later in life when someone might otherwise be considered beyond all chance of transformation.
These discussions were held within the context of hope for cultural understanding in an effort to overcome our national divisions. The recommendations and outcomes of this convening explored ways in which the arts can be used as a tool to push back against intolerance and polarization, as well as a way in which to empower individuals, communities, and society as a whole.
