You are invited to join us as we welcome the community to the newly renovated Lotus Firebay, located at 105 S. Rogers, on Saturday, February 23.  Featuring musical showcases by two Fairview student groups, interactive all-ages art, hands-on crafts, and complimentary light refreshments and drinks.

 

Are you part of a neighborhood in Bloomington? a group like Girl Scouts? a school? a community organization?  Then come create a banner to celebrate neighborhood pride, group identity, and all that makes up our beloved Bloomington community!  Inspired by the banners used in Brazil’s Maracatu Carnival tradition, Lotus is inviting groups and individuals to make and display their banners as part of the 25th Lotus World Music & Arts Festival — whatever group or organization you may identify with, bring group members with you or just come by yourself.

 

The 2018 Commemorative Pin ($5) gets you into the Sunday World Spirit Concert so that you can wrap up your Festival weekend with a celebration of music close to home with a salute to Indiana musician Quinten “Lotus” Dickey.  Features film, stories, and songs with Dillon Bustin & Bob Lucas (US) and a performance by 2018 Lotus Dickey artist Molsky’s Mountain Drifters (US).

Unwind and restore with a unique yoga experience after an exciting Festival weekend.   Students of all levels are welcome to join this accessible practice and encouraged to work at their own level.  Sessions contain multiple segments and participants may drop in or leave as they choose.  Multiple teachers will be on hand to demonstrate and assist.

Follow the big brass-band sounds of Festival artist Lemon Bucket Orkestra (Canada) and join in as the procession takes over Walnut Ave. Grab a flag, shake a tail feather, and be part of the celebration!

Join award-winning, chart-topping, ukulele artist James Hill for a workshop that will boost your uke skills, no matter what your level! Based on James Hill’s book of the same name, BOOSTER UKE takes you from “ho-hum” to “big fun” in a relaxed, stress-free way. The secret: Chord Twins, a simple technique that will change the way you play.

We’re celebrating our 25th anniversary with a little help from one of the greatest university drumlins in the country! The IU Drumline will perform in the Festival HQ area on Kirkwood in front of the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

Big Tent, a 360° video and audio projection installation/venue (free, located at 4th & Washington), leverages immersive technology to create a unique, communal viewing experience for Festival attendees.

When it gets dark, be sure to turn your attention to the Monroe County Courthouse dome for for a dazzling 360° “projection-mapping” display celebrating 25 years of the Lotus World Music & Arts Festival in Bloomington.  The creative team at local Blockhouse Studios, in partnership with Lotus, will light up the Courthouse dome and clock tower with imagery and special effects inspired by the “Lotus vibe” of 25 years as well as the intricate details of this historic building’s architectural features.

Free all-ages fun and open to the public, Arts Village is located in the heart of the Festival.  Enjoy two full evenings of interactive installations, visual arts, hands-on activities, demonstrations, and more!
Featured activities include “Maracatu: Celebrations form Brazil to Bloomington” Carnival-inspired make-n-take ganzas (Brazilian rattles), community banner installation, and demo/performance; Lotus mandala experience; hulu hoopin’; chalk art masterpieces

Don’t miss the long-awaited Lotus reunion of Uncle Earl (US), the stringband supergroup that is Abigail Washburn, Kristin Andreassen, KC Groves, and Rayna Gellert.  An opening set with Mamadou Kelly (Mali) sets the mood.  Also, be there to see the first reveal of our new 25th-year stage backdrop!

Celebrate Latin American community and heritage with Lotus Festival artist Rio Mira!  This dynamic group from Ecuador and Colombia will perform their unique marimba music, followed by conversation with the artists and even some food trucks.  Come enjoy this free, family-friendly event, no matter what language you speak — the program will be primarily in Spanish, but music is universal.

The IUPUI Arts and Humanities Institute (IAHI) will host two artists-in-residence during 2018. Residents will be provided an honorarium ($3000), a materials and installation budget ($8500), housing, and round trip airfare.

 

This inaugural convening of Indiana's statewide arts community (artists, arts organization, arts educators, arts advocates and supporters) will explore the theme: "Community Engagement: Ideas, Stories and Change that Matters." The convening will highlight the importance of art inspired community engagement.

Continue the celebration of National Arts in Education Week in Indianapolis on Friday, September 16, at 12:15 p.m. at the Indianapolis Artsgarden with special musical performances by the following student groups:

This interactive presentation will delve into the history and current landscape of teaching artistry, a growing profession. Learn about teaching artists’ roles in education and the unique skills and inspiration they bring to the classroom. Hear from professional teaching artists Bob Sander and Jingo de la Rosa and student Janay Watson on their experiences in the field.
NATIONAL ARTS IN EDUCATION WEEK, SEPTEMBER 11 – 17

Curious to know what the arts look like when implemented in the classroom? During National Arts in Education Week, you will have the opportunity to visit two high-performing schools and learn what students experience in the arts on an every day basis.

Do you remember what you learned in art class in the third grade? Do you know what fifth graders typically learn in music class? Here’s the chance to find out what you know!
