This is an incredibly challenging time to be a leader in any capacity, but especially in a community arts organization. Let’s be honest: as leaders, we don’t know with absolute certainty whether our ideas, our strategies—our leadership—will result in our vision of impact. This is especially true at this very emergent time. Arts funding is constantly under attack. We find ourselves having to repeatedly justify our existence, often pushing us into survival mode and stifling creativity in the very places it should thrive. Historically, community arts organizations have looked to large-scale, stable, and well-resourced arts institutions—our symphonies, operas, and museums—as models of success. While these elements have their place in institutional capacity building, I’m not convinced that these are the most important measures of success for creating more relevant, sustainable community arts organizations. Now, I’m not suggesting that you fire your Board or cash out your endowment investments. We should definitely keep the best of the best practices from our arts institution friends. I’m saying that we must also remind ourselves that the word community comes first in our field for a reason.

Just two years ago, Hallmark created a program that would lead to new ways of thinking, personal inspiration, and growth for more than 800 members of its creative community. Now, it has grown to benefit nonprofit organizations in its local Kansas City community. Hallmark’s #my5days program offers five work days per year for creative employees to renew, explore, learn, and think differently about the world and work around them.

One of them I truly treasured was Richard Gibson, who went on to enlist in the Marines after high school and serve his country with honor. Adequate funding for schools keep arts programs alive. Public investment in arts agencies allows institutions in large cities and rural communities alike to provide arts opportunities for their citizens.

My first public artwork, Seed the Change, was a chance to scale up these explorations of labor, change, and collaboration in a monumental fashion. They may not agree with what they think, but they do care to know what they think—and it is certainly one key factor that weighs on how they cast their votes, what issues they focus on, and what areas they deepen their knowledge. Since we know that ads bring attention to issues, inspire and educate the public, and mobilize grassroots, they are one great way to invite data and impact stories that can lead to policy change. And, we know that legislators read their local newspapers, so the message gets through.

It is not the public (whatever indeed that may mean) that decides which art projects are to be supported with taxpayer dollars.” That statement is simply inaccurate. Mr. D’Amato must be unaware that the public is embedded in the entire grantmaking process at the NEA. This in part is why the NEA has received wide support from both Republicans and Democrats for half a century.

I shared stories about myself and my colleagues with my legislators about how the arts are fundamental to our humanity. I wrote about how the arts ennoble and inspire us, fostering goodness and beauty. While I have never abandoned these arts-for-arts-sake messages in my advocacy, I have learned that they are rarely stand-alone winners. Today, I augment these fundamental benefits of the arts with pragmatic ones—stories and research that connect the arts to what keeps our community leaders awake at night: jobs, economy, education, healthcare, and community development. Read More2015 is almost over, and what a year of successes and changes we've had as a country. The unemployment rate dropped to its lowest level in more than seven years; the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage nationwide; a landmark climate change agreement was approved; the U.S. embassy reopened in Cuba after 54 years; and a week ago, the Every Student Succeeds Act passed--a tremendous win for arts education. The arts won a number of other legislative victories too, such as increased federal arts funding and arts-friendly legislation regarding both IRA tax rollovers and visa law along with key successes at the state and local levels.
