Frommer’s popular travel guide recently selected Asheville, NC as the number one destination in the country to visit in 2015.

“We’re picking [Asheville] this year because the sketchy riverside area has been totally redone thanks to the New Belgium Brewery, which has poured millions of dollars into this area, making new parks, artists collectives, farmers markets, bike paths,” says Frommer. “It’s just a great place to go. It has the most breweries per capita, so it’s always a party.”

The results are in for this year’s “Art of Education” Campaign!  Congratulations to Cascade K-8 Community School of Shoreline, WA, recipient of the $5,000 grand prize.  Consumers, parents, and educators nationwide determined the grant winners by voting for their favorite K-12 public schools through the KRIS Facebook page.

 

Fifteen other schools around the country will receive additional grants totaling $20,000. They include:

Yesterday, American voters turned out to the polls to vote for federal, state and local candidates and ballot measures. With many headlines focusing on control of the U.S. Senate or trends of state legislature leadership, arts education was central to several races throughout the country.

Public Art Network Council member Constance White will be the next Vice President of Public Art at the Arts & Science Council of Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Originally from Texas, White earned her BFA in art history from Southern Methodist University and worked for nine years for the Percent for Public Art Program at the Office of Cultural Affairs with the city of Dallas. Most recently she has spent the last eight years as the Art Program Manager for the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.

Launched in summer 2012 under a low profile, Thrive Fund’s initial goal was to provide financial stability for the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Americans for the Arts, a leading partner in The National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS), will launch in partnership with NCCAS the 2014 National Core Arts Standards in a streaming webinar on Wednesday, June 4, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Join arts education leaders from around the country to learn more about the new standards. The event will feature interviews with a broad spectrum of arts education providers, including certified educators, teaching artists, administrators, national/state policy makers, and arts education advocates.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Democratic National Convention Committee Co-Chair and Chairman and CEO of Duke Energy Jim Rogers have been added to the roster of speakers at the Americans for the Arts Action Fund ArtsSpeak event on September 4 at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.

The Appalachian Veterans Arts & Humanities Collective at Appalachian State University is pleased to announce its next event: a staged reading of Brothers Like These, on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 7:30 pm in Parkway Ballroom, Plemmons Student Union.  Reception to follow.

Brothers Like These is comprised of stories and poems, written by Vietnam combat veterans in Classroom B, an out of the way room in the basement of the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, where they gathered to write every Wednesday for nearly two years

A special free screening of Big Voice in celebration of National Arts in Education Week. The 2016 Documentary that follows a year in the life of Santa Monica High’s choir director, Jeff Huls. From auditions to graduation, the story highlights a director’s passion for music, his efforts to achieve excellence, the challenges of his students and the transformative power of the arts.

The Old-Time Square Dance will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2015 from 7:00 to 10:00 PM at the Denton Civic Center on 459 West Salisbury Street in Denton, NC. Providing music for the October dance will be local bluegrass band The Oak Tree Boys with dances called by Ken Beck. Musicians for the Oak Tree Boys will be Max Lanning on fiddle; Matthew Nance, banjo; Scott Arnold, mandolin; Tim Maines, guitar and Mike Plummer on the bass.
 

As part of the national initiative, the Arts Council of Wilmington/NHC will launch its Ears on the Arts Listening Tour — gatherings of community leaders, artists and arts organizations to discuss local arts, culture, and creativity to generate partnerships and increased energy around the grassroots movement to elevate the arts in America.  This leg of the Ears on the Arts Listening Tour is intended for independent artists of all disciplines.  Input from the tour will inform the Arts Council of Wilmington's strategic plan.
