On May 27, the Smithsonian National Zoo, in partnership with the community-based environmental advocacy non-profit The Washed Ashore Project , opened the “Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea” exhibit. Featuring 17 larger-than-life sculptures made from plastic pollution from the oceans, the free exhibit, which will conclude Sept.

These individuals were nominated by their peers to advise Americans for the Arts staff on programs and services for the fields of Arts Education, Emerging Leadership, Public Art, and the Private Sector. Each will serve three year terms beginning January 1, 2016 and will join an existing slate of advisory council members, national leaders, who use their field expertise to connect the national work of Americans for the Arts to the local level.

National Endowment for the Arts Awards $75,000 for Americans for the Arts

In its first 50 years, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) awarded more than $5 billion in grants to recipients in every state and U.S. jurisdiction. Today, the NEA announced awards totaling more than $27.6 million in its first funding round of fiscal year 2016, including an Art Works award of $75,000 to Americans for the Arts to support the Public Art Resource Center (PARC)
 
The Art Works category supports the creation of work and presentation of both new and existing work, lifelong learning in the arts, and public engagement with the arts through 13 arts disciplines or fields.

Minneapolis City Council Committee Unanimously Permanent Public Art Funding Proposal

A committee of the Minneapolis City Council unanimously passed a proposal that would set aside a designated percentage of the city’s net debt bond for public art funding. The proposed ordinance, which was passed on a 5-0 vote, would enforce a minimum amount of funding for maintaining and building new public artworks each year. The minimum amount for public art would be equal to 1.5% of the debt the city takes on for public projects. The proposed ordinance will now be submitted to a vote by the full City Council.

North Californian Artists Compete for Public Art Installations at New Sacramento Arena

When it opens in the fall of 2016, Sacramento’s new downtown arena Golden Center 1 will be home to five public art installations worth $9.3 million. While Sacramento City Council initially received praise for integrating public art in the new arena, they received much backlash in March 2015 when they first selected New York City artist Jeff Koons’s Coloring Book sculpture—with a price tag of $8 million. Local artists condemned the City Council’s lack of support of the city’s own talent pool.

The Salina, Kansas Community Art & Design (CAD) program was developed in 2000. Brad Anderson, Executive Director of the Salina Arts & Humnanities local arts agency that manages the program, discusses the importance of public art and how the program has impacted the community in this article which also details the included projects and some of the controversies that have been encountered along the way.

Anderson states "if I instructed our office to only follow the direction of the negative voices in the community, we wouldn’t have any art."

Google Art Project's Street Art Collection Now Over 10,000 Images

Google contiues to photograph street art and murals around the world in high-resoultion images. Various organzations have have teamed up with Google to collect images of the emperial artworks and in some instances created online tours for users who can't travel to the location to view and learn about the artwork.

Artist Random Act states that “Street art is trying to elevate itself to a higher art form, and Google is allowing us to do so.” Google is preserving street art even while it is having trouble  documenting musuem artworks due to copyright issues.

Land art artist Michael Heizer has been developing "City" in the Garden Valley, Neveda since the early 1970's. Today, the land around the artwork is under threat of development. Though the land that the artwork sits on is owned by the artist, there is a movement starting to protect the land around it.

The original artists of Berlin’s famed Kreuzberg murals have decided to remove their work by painting over the two pieces with black paint. Conceived several years ago by a small team of artists, the murals were painted by Italian street artist BLU and French artist JR. The first murals depicted two figures showing East and West Berlin gang signs attempting to unmask each other, and the other showed a man shackled by gold watches on his wrists.
