I can track most of the most important moments of my career in nonprofits arts with experiences with Americans for the Arts. Whether it's live in-person convenings, the exhaustive and accessible research, or their movement building policy work, I've benefited enormously from the resources made available to me as an Americans for the Arts member.

As a member of the Emerging Leaders Council from 2009 to 2012, I had the opportunity to serve my colleagues while reaping the benefits of building and serving a national network, experimenting with new methods of service including audience and content development, event planning and presenting not to mention the requisite commiseration and merry-making. Those three years were transformative.

Students enrolled in Eastern Michigan University’s (EMU) Arts Management Programs (Undergraduate & Graduate) produce two-day music festivals, art competitions, face and body paint tailgating activities, art crawl events, and reality TV shows as part of an academic service learning project and student organizational activity designed to give members their first experiences as arts administrators.

Recently, the hit TV show, GLEE, aired its season finale. After six seasons of entertaining audiences through the teenage lives of young performers, the show came to a close with a touching tribute to the impact that the arts in public schools can have on students.

GLEE was a musical comedy-drama series which aired on the Fox network from 2009-2015.  Touching on themes of social justices, sexuality, race, relationships, and teamwork, the characters and themes resonated with young arts learners.

Americans for the Arts Annual Convention kicked off unofficially on June 12th with the preconferences and their related field trips. The Public Art Preconference included a tour of repurposed artist studios and enclaves in Nashville, Tennessee. Good ideas can come from anywhere…if you ask us, convicts are pretty interesting people” comments Ben Pfutzenreuter, one of the founders of Concepting with Convicts, a project that partners with convicted felons to create powerful ads through the prison pen pal system. On Friday, March 14, approximately 1,800 high school age students from across Tennessee were invited to hear a performance by this year’s Annual Convention keynote speaker, Ben Folds, who had premiered his new concerto with the Nashville Symphony orchestra at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center the night before. After the performance, the students participated in a special Q & A session with Folds and the Symphony conductor, Giancarlo Guerrero.

English students at West Virginia University disuss Oxford's recently-defined word of the year, "selfie." The word first appeared in Australian chat rooms in 2002 and in just the last two years, has increased in usage by 17,000 percent. The rise in popularity and usage is attributed to the continuing growth of social media as a form of communication. Everyone from teens to celebreties are using the word to describe photos they take of themsleves.

Even with arts education on the wane in many public schools, a new study by The Wallace Foundation suggests that digital technologies are changing the artistic landscape for many young students. "New Opportunities for Interest-Driven Arts Learning in a Digital Age" offers a new take on arts learning based on innovative efforts to bring kids, the technology they are constantly using, and the arts together. In the age of do-it-yourself and tell-your-own-story, this is a new approach - technology-based arts learning.
