Americans for the Arts and the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) today announced that Lt. Governor Randy McNally (R-TN) was awarded the Public Leadership in the Arts Award for State Arts Leadership last night at NLGA’s annual meeting in Wilmington, Delaware. The annual award honors a public official who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the advancement of the arts at the state/territory level.

Americans for the Arts and the National Association of Counties (NACo) have awarded Guilford County Commissioner Katie “Kay” S. Cashion of Greensboro, North Carolina, the Public Leadership in the Arts Award for County Arts Leadership at NACo’s annual conference in Las Vegas. The award honors an elected county official who has significantly advanced the arts in the community they serve.

The award recognizes and celebrates exemplary work at the intersection of the arts and community life, and was presented this morning at Americans for the Arts’ 2019 Annual Convention in Minneapolis.

Americans for the Arts today honored 50 outstanding public arts projects created in 2018 through the Public Art Network Year in Review program, the only national program that specifically recognizes the most compelling public art. Chosen by public art experts, the roster of selected projects was unveiled this morning at Americans for the Arts’ Annual Convention in Minneapolis. This is the 18th year that Americans for the Arts has recognized public art works.

The Americans for the Arts Action Fund (Arts Action Fund) today announced a new podcast series called ArtsVote 2020 with Ben Folds. Acclaimed singer-songwriter, Americans for the Arts Artists Committee Member, and ArtsVote 2020 Chair Ben Folds hosts the podcast series and is accompanied by former U.S. Senator Mark Begich of Alaska. The bipartisan series is the only one of its kind interviewing 2020 presidential candidates exclusively on the arts and arts education.

Americans for the Arts announced today that Stephanie Johnson-Cunningham, a museum professional and arts educator based in Brooklyn, New York, will be awarded the 2019 American Express Emerging Leader Award at Americans for the Arts’ Annual Convention in the Twin Cities on June 15. The annual award recognizes an exceptional new and/or young arts professional for their exemplary leadership, deep engagement with community, and strong commitment to advancing the arts.

Vans, the original action sports brand and advocate for creative expression, named Flagstaff High School from Flagstaff, Ariz. as the grand prize winner of the 10th annual Vans Custom Culture art competition. Flagstaff High School generated the most votes for their designs winning $75,000 to put towards its arts program on behalf of Vans and its program partners, Journeys, Yoobi, Laguna College of Art + Design (LCAD) and Americans for the Arts. The four additional finalists – Atherton High School from Louisville, Ky., New Bedford High School from New Bedford, Mass., Seneca Valley Senior High School from Harmony, Pa. and Van Wert High School from Van Wert, Ohio – will each receive $10,000 to put towards their arts programs, along with a limited-edition Vans gift.

Americans for the Arts will hold its 2019 Annual Convention in the Twin Cities from June 13-16, 2019. It is the largest gathering in the nation of arts leaders and their partners in creative business, education, and government. Through more than 40 sessions, participants will explore the deep economic, civic, and social impacts that the arts generate across the nation, as well as the role of the arts in creating and sustaining healthy and equitable communities.
