The Ardelia Trio is a dynamic presence on the international chamber music scene. Forged by a common commitment to presenting innovative and engaging interactive concerts, Janey Choi (violinist), Clara Yang (cellist), and Jihea Hong-Park (pianist), formed the group after working together in various capacities as performing and teaching artists. In their inaugural year, they were awarded a prestigious grant to partner with arts organization, Mécénat, and establish a community concert residency in Seoul, South Korea.

Gabriel Medd played his first gig at the age of ten, and he has been performing on his trumpet ever since. Now 23, the Iowa City native has occupied venues at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Iowa City Jazz Festival, Jazz Standard, Iridium, Chicago Jazz Showcase, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and the Blue Note. He has embraced opportunities to blend his ideas and sounds with those of other incredible musicians in the Gibson/Baldwin Grammy Jazz Ensemble, the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, and the Grammy Award-Winning Mingus Big Band.

When seminal documentarian Ed Pincus, considered the father of first person non-fiction film, is diagnosed with a terminal illness, he and collaborator Lucia Small team up to make one last film, much to the chagrin of Jane, Ed’s wife of 50 years. Told from two filmmakers’ points of view, ONE CUT, ONE LIFE challenges the form of first person documentary. Ed and Lucia’s unique approach to filming offers a vulnerability and intimacy rarely seen in non- fiction, questioning whether some things might be too private to be made public.

DCINY presents Life and Remembrance, a concert featuring the works of Mark Hayes and Pepper Choplin. In his widely popular Requiem, Hayes reflects on the text in Latin and English in a rendition written for both chorus and orchestra. This performance also features the world premiere of Choplin’s Our Father: A Journey Through The Lord's Prayer, an exploration of the prayer through music.

This concert features settings of the Requiem text by two insightful French composers. Fauré’s Requiem is imbued with a sense of gentleness while the Duruflé Requiem is one of “20th century’s most beloved choral works.” Both acts feature a full orchestra, large mixed chorus and solo performances.

DCINY presents an evening of history and culture from six different countries of the Southeast Asian region. SPICE, MAGIC, AND MYSTIQUE: The Music of Southeast Asia includes traditional music from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Taiwan conducted by Anthony Giles. This performance also features orchestral and wind ensemble music from the Ingelmoor High Symphonic Band and Orchestra under the guest direction of Ted Christensen and Jim Rice.

A one night only benefit event featuring artists and activists gathered to end violence against women and girls through creative and innovative global campaigns. The evening will usher in the One Billion Rising events taking place across the globe on/around Feb 14th. Proceeds from the evening will benefit One Billion Rising work to end violence against women and girls in Afghanistan,Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and the Philippines. Guests are encouraged to come dressed as their “revolutionary selves.”

One of the most frequently performed and recognizable major choral works, Verdi’s Requiem unleashes the dramatic fervor of opera with a full symphony orchestra, large mixed chorus and compelling solo performances.

The work utilizes biblical themes drawn from the African American gospel and choral tradition. Ringing in the Chinese New Year is Yellow River Cantata by composer Xian Xinghai, with Guest Conductor Jie Yi and an international cast of musicians.

The New York band, Matuto, arrives onstage at The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center, bringing with them the distinctive rhythms of Carnival in Recife and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. This Subscription Series event takes place at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 23 in The Matthews Opera House Theater. Tickets may also be purchased separately.

Come Away to the Skies: A High, Lonesome Mass is a choral setting of the traditional Mass, using early American hymn tunes and bluegrass instruments. The performance is suitable for all ages and families. Featuring The Chuck Nation Bluegrass Band.

How can you tailor your organization's message to create deeper engagement with volunteers? Arts organizations will learn effective ways to engage and retain their business volunteers with the goal of creating long-term advocates for its mission. Attendees will work through three steps of volunteer engagement: Engagement beyond the first interaction; Education as a basis for building advocates; Expanding volunteer commitment to the next level.

Kick off the holidays by reconnecting with program arts hosts, mentors, and former interns!

On Friday, December 19 at 8:00 pm, under the direction of Artistic Director Thea Kano, the New York City Master Chorale (www.nycmasterchorale.org) will kick off its ninth season with a holiday concert titled A Ceremony of Carols. The Chorale will perform Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, and a variety of holiday pieces, both a cappella and with harp accompaniment, including Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumuque, Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium, and the late Stephen Paulus’ The Holly and the Ivy.
