First Fridays is a monthyl event that takes place in Long Beach, CA every first Friday of the month. The mission of First Fridays is to promote economic development with in the city while providing local artists with a platform to showcase their art to the community.

Arts For The Schools presents GuGu Drum Group, a theatrical music group hailing from Shanghai. GuGu Drum Group tells ancient Chines fables and tales through theatrical drum vignettes. Their high-energy dance and music combine with their traditional and fantastical Chinese costumes to enchant people of all ages. Come for the art, stay for the fun!

Arts For The Schools presents Gaelynn Lea, the winner of the 2016 NPR Tiny Desk Concert competition. Outperforming more than 6,100 other entries, Gaelynn’s beautiful lyrics and violin captured the hearts and ears of all of her judges. Gaelynn combines popular folk and rock sounds with traditional Celtic and American fiddle to produce a sound all her own. As a sufferer of Brittle Bones Disease, Gaelynn uses her music and its success as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change.

Arts For The Schools presents VersaStyle, the LA-based dance ensemble with moves that inspire and awe. Watch them combine hip-hop, salsa, and more into one incredible act that proves the importance of crossing racial and socio-economic boundaries through the common passion of their art.

Arts For The Schools presents The Cashore Marionettes. Bring the whole family for a night of spectacularly real puppet mastery, with stories that touch both children and adults alike. The Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta calls it “A wonderful world of breath-taking magic.” Come watch Joseph Cashore perform the art he has been perfecting since age 11 and marvel at the real emotions these beautiful puppets illicit.

Arts For The Schools presents Fémina in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Fémina is a trio of female Argentinean singer-songwriters. Their show-stopping harmonies mix with cumbia, rumba, reggae, funk and more to create a beautiful (and catchy) sound.

A Step Beyond begins classes during National Arts in Education Week.  Students whose families live below the poverty line receive free after school dance, academics and family services. Currently, A Step Beyond serves seventy students in the Escondido and San Marcos neighborhoods.

We invite you to Arts For The Schools' first annual fundraiser that combines the festival culture of our lively region with a unique new competition event that promotes community involvement. Join us for food, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), live entertainment, local artisans and vendors, and a competition that requires teams to build and race their own wooden boat built by hand (no power tools allowed!). Bring the whole family for fun a day on the beach.
All proceeds go towards Arts For The Schools' arts education programming.

The finale concert for the summer choral festival will be held on Saturday, August 6, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s by the Sea in Pacific Beach. This concert will feature the participants of the festival and the repertoire they will work on over the course of the three days.

Friday, August 5 at 8:00 p.m. will be the season premiere concert for the San Diego Pro Arte Voices—the choir-in-residence for the San Diego Summer Choral Festival. Performing alone, and together with the Festival Faculty, the Pro Arte Voices will present exciting repertoire from the choral canon as well as emerging living composers. Highlights of this program include the Bruckner Motets, Giles Swayne Magnificat, Charles Ives Psalm 90, and an African piece called Indodana.

The showcase concert for the San Diego Summer Conducting Workshop will be held on Tuesday, August 2, at 8:00 p.m. in Smith Recital Hall at SDSU. This concert features the Conducting Fellows, chosen from a pool of applicants from around the country.
