September 23, 2010- The United States House Representatives unanimously passed Resolution 1582by voice vote: "Honoring and saluting Americans for the Arts on its 50th anniversary." The House Resolution was sponsored by Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY), longtime Congressional Arts Caucus Co-Chair, along with 28 co-sponsors including a number of Representatives who spoke on its behalf: Rep. Todd Platts (R-PA) Co-Chair of the Congressional Arts Caucus, Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO), Rep. Vern Ehlers (R-MI), and Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ).

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Public Art Network, Americans for the Arts today announces the 2010 Public Art Year in Review. The Year in Review recognizes 40 of the year’s best public art works in the United States and Canada, consisting of projects from 29 cities in 15 states. The works were chosen from more than 300 entries from across the country.

The award will be presented today at the Americans for the Arts Half-Century Summit Public Art Preconference in Baltimore. The Public Art Network Award was created to recognize and honor innovative and creative contributions and commitment in the field of public art.

Americans for the Arts presents the 2010 Arts Education Award to KID smART, a New Orleans-based arts education organization. The award will be presented on June 25 at the Americans for the Arts Half-Century Summit in Baltimore. Given annually by Americans for the Arts since 2007, the award honors the best in arts education program design and execution and organizational leadership. The Arts Education Award is presented by the Arts Education Council of Americans for the Arts.

Americans for the Arts presents the 2010 Michael Newton Award to Joanne Riley, president of the Cultural Alliance of York County. The award will be presented on June 27 at the Americans for the Arts Half-Century Summit in Baltimore. Given annually since 1991, the Michael Newton Award recognizes exemplary leadership skills and extraordinary dedication to supporting the arts through a united arts fund, which is a combined effort to raise money on behalf of multiple arts institutions in the community.

Americans for the Arts presents the 2010 Selina Roberts Ottum Award to Lee Howard, founder of the Alliance of New York State Arts Councils and former chair of the National Assembly of Local Arts Agencies. The award will be presented to Howard on June 26 at the Americans for the Arts Half-Century Summit in Baltimore. Given annually since 1991, the Selina Roberts Ottum Award recognizes outstanding contributions in the local arts agency field and is presented by Americans for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Americans for the Arts presents the 2010 Alene Valkanas State Arts Advocacy Award to Anne Katz, executive director of Arts Wisconsin. The award will be presented on June 27 at the Americans for the Arts Half-Century Summit in Baltimore. The award honors an individual who has dramatically affected the political landscape through arts advocacy efforts at the state level. The Alene Valkanas State Arts Advocacy Award is presented by the State Arts Action Network of Americans for the Arts.

Americans for the Arts presents the 2010 Emerging Leader Award to Marc Vogl, program officer at The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The award will be presented to Vogl on June 26 at the Americans for the Arts Half-Century Summit in Baltimore. Given annually since 2006, the Emerging Leader Award honors exceptional young arts professionals who demonstrate exemplary leadership, innovative thinking, and a commitment to advancing the arts in their local, state, or national communities.

The Arts Education Council of Americans for the Arts welcomes arts education leaders from across the country for an opportunity to examine the future of sustainable, student-centered arts education. The arts education pre-conference will take place in Baltimore, June 24–25, 2010, prior to the Americans for the Arts Half-Century Summit. Arts educators will be looking at action-oriented strategies for moving decision makers from simply valuing arts education to prioritizing arts education.
